Calverton 171-9 (4 points)
Thoresby 166-8

Due to a late drop out yet again we set off on our travels without eleven players.
Although this was the first occasion were being a player short had any bearing
on the outcome of the game. On arrival Callum’s match
tax went up to £106 as he removed a good portion of his exhaust on the road
into the ground, which made for a great start to the afternoon!!!.
Nige lost the toss and we were invited to field,
At the other end Jonesey had replaced
Chesh and he was very unlucky not to take a wicket as
he had 2 catches dropped and a stumping given not out. Jono
was recalled to the attack and struck immediately twice, the hat trick ball was
a vicious delivery that struck the new batsman a midship.
Jono took his fifth wicket and Callum
also claimed a wicket as Wright continued to accumulate runs as he lost
partners and remained not out with a fine seventy six.
In reply Thoresby opened with Chesh and Ben who both
stroked the ball around until the change of bowling resulted in Cheshs downfall. Ben was then out to a good boundary catch,
this had been a superb innings especially one straight six. Lee went to the
crease and worked the ball around well until he was caught at point. Ian played
a few nice shots before he was also caught. Jonesey
looked in good touch until he somehow managed to get bowled round his legs.
This brought Jamie to the crease. To say he had not played in two years he seemed to have plenty of time to play and even facing two of Calverton’s Premier league bowlers played very well, one drive being probably the shot of the game. Jamie was very unfortunate to be out when he played on, to leave Nige and Jono the task of scoring the remaining fifty runs.
The game was totally transformed with both Nige and Jono looking well set,
the umpire misinterpreted the rules and refused to allow one of Calverton’s
youngsters to bowl. The game stopped and when eventually a bowler was found the
umpire again intervened to give Nige out to a very
dodgy lbw. Callum joined Jono and the two made a valiant attempt to win the game. Jono fell with a couple of overs
to go and even though Glen and Callum ran well we
fell just short.
This was a game played in excellent spirit and again Calvertons
youngsters were a credit to their club. One poor decision along with the rules misunderstanding
did spoil things a little but they were genuine mistakes.
We now have to dig deep and hope players within the club will try and help out
through the remaining fixtures or relegation and no more Sunday cricket will sadly
become certainties.
