Thoresby Colliery II (20)     229 for 2 wkts

Thurcroft II (1)                     120 a.o.

This hot, sultry and draining afternoon had a strange start with only six Thurcroft players present just five minutes before the start. Unfortunately a car had broken down near Cuckney and another of their lads was detailed to return there to rescue the stranded crew. They arrived just on time and the match was able to begin in a proper way, Thoresby having won the toss and deciding to bat.

Bill Pitchford’s inswing was proving useful and youngster Shepherd was finding some good late movement in the heavy conditions. The pitch, meanwhile, having only been uncovered at 1.40pm, was certainly green in places. The batsmen were just starting to find some rhythm when Pitchford pulled off a remarkable caught and bowled off Halfpenny, snatching the ball just centimetres from his face from a full blooded drive.

This brought Chatterton to the wicket and Pitchford proved equally frustrating for the left hander, the ball swinging markedly away from his attempted cover drives. Evans remained patient, knowing that Pitchford would tire in the heat and the youngsters would probably find it difficult to sustain line and length as the innings wore on.

Evans’ theory would prove to be correct. As he middled the ball more frequently (Stu’s first ten scoring shots were: 1x1 and 9x4!) and the score began to climb, the young Thurcroft side began to feel they were in for a long afternoon. Chatterton had added 26 in a partnership of 60 when he was bowled by a good leg stump yorker from the returning Shepherd. But by this time Thurcroft had turned to veteran slow bowler Tom Oxley who, up until the 26th over, had been behind the stumps!

This proved to be the turning point for the Thoresby innings as skipper Woods began to take a heavy toll of the bowling. He reached fifty in just 18 scoring shots and 20-odd balls, timing the ball sweetly to the ropes. Evans then reached his fifty and the Thurcroft lads found their task harder still as the acceleration came. One over went for 14, two more for 11, still others for 10. The last thirteen overs went for 120.

Undefeated, Brian and Stu left the field delighted but with barely the strength left to raise their bat to the appreciative applause. Red faces and cool showers all round!

The total looked beyond the inexperienced visitors but would Thoresby be able to take all ten wickets for a maximum twenty points?

Hutchinson, in his last game until the end of August, settled early nerves with a wicket in his first over, Oxley playing on to leg stump. At the other end Paul Swain was finding some good movement and the occasional flyer when he really let it go. But it was Hutch who struck again, Chatster taking a good catch low down at second slip. Steve Scall replaced Swain and, in his second over, bowled Thurcroft skipper Smith.

Young opener Plant had played very well up until that point, timing the ball especially well off his legs. But then he got too ambitious and had a swing at several deliveries that didn’t want it. After almost having him stumped, Scall came good again and had him LBW, trying to nurdle a straight ball to leg.

From thereon a combination of Woods and Chatterton took a couple more wickets, both with the help of excellent running catches from Jamie Whiteside. This brought the experienced Pitchford to join youngster Shepherd and they hung around for a while. Pitchford, having launched his first ball for a boundary, then took up uncharacteristic stonewalling. Shepherd, meanwhile, looked to be a quality batsman in the making with some excellent defence but crisp hitting of the bad ball.

However we felt that Pitchford would eventually return to type and, in Evans’ second over, he had a yahoo and was well caught by Hutch of a fizzing top edger at point. This opened up the real tail of Thurcroft’s team and Stuart bowled really well at them, picking up two wickets in his third (and final) over. Chatterton took the final wicket with a googly and victory was ours, Shepherd remaining with a very creditable 47*.

Well done to the Thurcroft youngsters for sticking to their task. As with Blidworth, their time will come - when we are all bumbling round the boundary ropes and falling over our walking sticks (probably the season after next!).

With Bilsthorpe losing at Roses this opens the top of the table up again.
