Thoresby Colliery II [20]       165-3

Rose Leisure [1]                     64 ao

Ten-man Thoresby made their third trip to Gainsborough in a month, this time to visit the pleasant Trent-side ground of Roses.

After the pre-match inspection of the visibly moveable pitch, and the usual theorising about “shall we, shan’t we?” and “could we, couldn’t we?” Brian stuck to his guns on winning the toss and decided to bat. Halfpenny and Evans began solidly, taking care to play every delivery on its merits. This was necessary since low bounce was particularly apparent; anything short outside off stump from the top end prompting the batsman to position himself for a cut shot only to find the ball creeping along at ankle height! Opposing captain Spencer was finding a good length and already seemed to realise that only well pitched up deliveries would be easy to score off. However, the openers moved along pretty well, until Halfpenny was caught at cover in the 16th over.

This brought Chatterton to the wicket and he immediately upped the scoring rate with three boundaries in his first five scoring shots. By now both opening bowlers had been replaced but the batting continued at a steady pace, reaching 60 by drinks. The last few weeks have shown us the benefit of preserving wickets and once again this was to be to our benefit. With 100 on the board and 10 overs left Chatt and Stu could really start to attack. Unfortunately Evans, breaking the habit of a lifetime, decided to hit a boundary. An ill-starred decision (and one he’s not likely to repeat in the next 30 years of his career) since two balls later he was bowled by veteran Clay’s slower ball. Skipper Woods once more played a trademark cameo knock with 18 at better than a run a ball, during which time Simon reached his second 50 of the season. And when Woody was out Jonny Edger made a useful quickfire 9 and ran well with Simon, taking us to a creditable 165 for 3.

A super 30-over knock from Chatt then, but most disappointed man of the day was Hutchy who had been promoted to the dizzy heights of no.6 [yes, that’s right Robbie, NUMBER SIX], but didn’t get to see action! Mind you, he would have his moment with an excellent bowling display.

Thoresby took to the field full of confidence and eager for an early wicket. Things started cagily with the batsmen obviously looking for quick singles to kickstart their innings. Clay looked in particularly good form but he mistakenly called Perry through to Chatt’s right hand; Simon gleefully hit one stump with the batsman still two yards out. And when, two balls later, Spencer played on from Edger, 16-2 was already making things difficult for Roses. Youngster Crooks, after bowling well, then looked to hit some crisp shots. He timed the ball well but was undone by the building pressure from Hutchy who yorked him on the final ball of his seventh over. It was becoming apparent to all that Clay was under increasing pressure to score the majority of the runs. He valiantly struck several drives over the infield but had little support; Brumby was out LBW, something that’s likely to plague his fledgling career if he doesn’t remember to use the bat soon.

Woody then got the vital wicket of Clay, playing all across a straight one. It then became something of a procession, with Hutchy proving impossible to get away on this low track and Woody bamboozling the younger batsmen with his variations in flight. And what with Chatt’s amicable commentary from mid-off (“Eyup, it’s the team coach!” …….. and ………….. “Now then young man, only 109 to get”) the end seemed nigh.

To their credit the young lads all worked hard and played straight ………….. they will have their day when we’re all packed up and gone! But it was Golden Arm Evans who was to finish the game swiftly, taking the last two wickets in his first five balls for no runs! Simon was quick to point out that this eclipsed his efforts on the opening day at Lea Park!

In the end, then, a good result achieved by patient batting and pressure bowling (an especially important spell from Hutchy) and good all-round enthusiastic team fielding. Roses were not a great outfit but it’s not been unknown for Thoresby to trip up against sides like this. Not today! We move on to an interesting home game against Killamarsh II.
