Thoresby CCC 2nds 150 for 8 wkts (46 overs) [20 pts]
Lea Park 105
all out (42 overs) [3 pts]
Thoresby
2nds kicked the season off with the first of three trips to Gainsborough in a
month. A warm afternoon but green track convinced new skipper Brian Woods to
bat on winning the toss.
Halfpenny
and Godfrey began cautiously as the ball seamed about. After a few
nerve-settling ones and twos all looked to be going well until Godfrey was
deceived by one nipping back from ouside off stump from veteran Ogden. This
brought newcomer Chatterton to the wicket and both he and Halfpenny struck
boundaries before the latter was given out caught behind, probably off the full
face of the pad. Stuart Evans was just starting to build confidence when he
picked out the only fielder on the legside boundary off Orton and Thoresby were
38-3.
Then came
the most significant partnership of the day. Alan Wilkinson joined Chatterton
and, as the bowling changed around, they both played clever cricket. Wilko was
severe on anything short, lapping several boundaries to the short legside rope.
Chatterton was effervescent, playing the ball into gaps and taking every
available run. Both were dropped on the way, neither an easy chance, but as the
hot sun drained the bowlers this duo took the initiative. Both were out in
quick succession looking for the final burst and really only Woody (13 in 6
balls) and Lee Willis could contribute at the end. However, 150 was a
respectable total on this track with a slow outfield thick with mowings.
Both
Thoresby’s opening bowlers, Hutcy and Jeppo, dropped straight on a length [must
be all the net practice, Jamie!], making scoring difficult and putting pressure
on the batsmen. When Hutchy had the first victim LBW at the end of his 6th
over, two balls later he threw in from cover point to run out new batsman
Elliott without facing a ball.
Unfortunately
Wilko had to leave early to go to work and both Lobley and Elton Moulds then
batted well for
However,
with the field set back and Park’s batsmen trying to force the issue, a run of
4 wickets in 19 balls, 3 of them to the sprightly Lippeatt, put the issue
firmly in Colliery’s favour. Enter secret weapon Chatterton with his unreadable
brand of mixed spin. Without giving away any secrets, his efforts completely
bamboozled the opposition and figures of 1-1-0-2 tell their own story. So, 97
for 4 had become 105 all out.
A good
result, then, with pleasing early-season contributions all round. A special
mention for young Luke Hutchinson who did a great job plugging a gap in the
field. Especially important when we only fielded with 10 men for most of the
game. We retrace our steps next Saturday to visit
