THORESBY COLLIERY 2nd (2)
86 all out
KILLAMARSH 2nd (20) 90 for 6
This somewhat ill-tempered affair saw Thoresby finishing a clear second, suffering from a lack of real match practice and an unstable team after numerous calls on personnel for Div 1 duties.
In addition, Killamarsh’s 1st XI fixture being called off at Whitwell on Saturday lunchtime saw the introduction of three of their senior players into the 2nd XI for the afternoon’s proceedings.
Losing the toss, Thoresby were inserted on a pleasant looking track. However, it soon became obvious that despite the laudable efforts on the square by the home club over the past seasons, the previous week’s dampness would mean a slow wicket. It took until the 10th over to reach double figures, during which time Thoresby had been 3 for 3, Ludlum accounting for Stu Evans LBW, Halfpenny getting a very fine nick to the keeper off Brammer and then Ludlum producing a beauty to bowl Chatterton. After a brief recovery Walker and Woods went the same way. Godfrey and Case offered more resistance as the ball softened, but by then the damage had been done.
Unfortunately Killamarsh, however innocently, then added insult to injury.
Bradbury, after a brief spell behind the stumps whilst the
regular keeper Burgess arrived, then began bowling off breaks. Not surprisingly
he appealed when Godfrey was hit on the pads in front. Everyone else knew that
Godfrey had got a big edge on the ball. Amazingly the umpire hadn’t registered
the nick – strange the sound didn’t carry 22 yards on the wind when everyone on
the boundary heard it! The dumbfounded Godfrey reluctantly tucked his bat under
his arm, took two paces to the dressing room, to be told by four Killamarsh players that he’d hit the ball. One of these
being skipper
And so, the tone for the game was set.
This, sadly, was against the background of the shocking “not out” decision of just a few weeks ago in the first fixture between the teams at Edwinstowe. In the eyes of the Thoresby boys, ever willing to play the game in the right way, this was red rag to a bull.
Regardless of the ensuing niggly atmosphere, that the bottom half of the order contributed 53 runs and the top half 10 illustrates that this was a poor batting display. Extras was top scorer by a distance. Only Case, Godfrey and Dickens could manage double figures. Lee Willis, looking dapper in his red footy socks, made a gutsy contribution, with soft hands against the spinner, to be not out at the end. But all out for 86 was never going to be easy to defend; the excellent attacking length of Ludlum proving the real downfall of Thoresby.
Because of the abrasive prelude, when Killamarsh came in to bat it was inevitable that they would get both barrels, in a ‘verbal’ sense, from the word go.
Once more scoring was not easy and Malpass
appeared to become unsettled by the comments flying around. You could almost
hear him thinking “It’s not meant to be like this in Division Six!” ……………. Well
no, it’s not, but you did ask for it! After one dangerous and unsuccessful
attempt at a pull off Evans, he repeated the stroke an over later off
Malpass’ shot skewed off the
outside edge, looped over the bowler and miraculously landed safe on its way to
Granted, it was unusual, but he had never actually re-made his ground after playing the shot and seemed to be more disturbed in mind that he’d tried to pull a ball on this front foot wicket.
Obviously this dismissal was going to upset the ‘Marsh boys and, on another day, it might not have happened. But such is the game of cricket and the influence of the players’ emotions on the way it is played. From there on in, it was always going to be a tense encounter.
First-teamer Bradley came to the wicket but was soon undone LBW hardly playing a shot at Evans’ in-swinger and Killamarsh were 11 for 2. However veteran Burgess was steadiness itself and he knew that eventually the runs would come. When he was yorked by Halfpenny they were already well past half-way and, despite Woods’ miserly spell and a late flurry of wickets from Chatterton, ‘Marsh were worthy victors in the 35th over.
A shame, then, that the game was tainted with a little ill-feeling. Thoresby retired to the bar to discuss the afternoon’s proceedings with their opponents (and, yes, to mend a few bridges, as is customary in the civilized world) but only Nicky Brammer appeared! Perhaps the thought of bottled beer – there was a power cut so nothing from the pumps, I’m afraid – was too much for them to stand. Or maybe they spent so long complaining to the umpire about Malpass’ dismissal they forgot about their role as hosts.
Come on boys, play hard when you step over the white line ……………… but afterwards have a drink. It’s only a game in Division Six.
