Thoresby Colliery II (17)       198-4

Eckington II (5)                      141-7

The tree-lined suntrap of Eckington was the latest venue for the Thoresby II roadshow. A remarkably wet week was transformed into a beautiful sunny afternoon and we were on. Credit must go to the septuagenarian groundsman team of three who had worked tirelessly, between downpours, to get the game on.

Thoresby were pleased to field a full eleven of some force, and delighted to witness the comeback to the game of Richard Garden after some ten years in the non-cricketing wilderness. And the fact that he was wearing brother Dave’s trousers meant, in spirit at least, a full turnout for The Brothers Garden since Norm was back in the ranks after his fortnight away.

Inserted on the inevitably damp pitch, Thoresby got off to a sound start. Eckington opener Allcock was feeling the effects of a heavy day at Old Trafford on the Friday – with no play possible he and a couple of teammates had spent the entire day on the beer, never actually getting into the ground. Marvellous!

Youngster Sellers was finding the new ball hard to control in the humid conditions and bowled numerous wides. Thoresby were also buoyed by the news that Eckington only started with 10 men, one coming later. However, their joy was shortlived when the eleventh man did arrive, only to be recognised by experienced pairing of Evans and Halfpenny as Rob Carlile, their 1st XI’s best bat!

The Thoresby innings built steadily on this narrow ground. A par score was difficult to judge because of the damp wicket and short boundary, especially on the pavilion side. Carlile had a hand in both of the first dismissals, having Evans caught at gully off his own bowling then taking an excellent one-handed catch at full stretch round the corner to despatch Halfpenny.

But then Chatterton got into his stride.

Those who watch the left-hander on a regular basis will recognise this as one of his very best innings, certainly the top one of this season.

From the word go he was at the bowlers, attacking with pure shot selection and timing the ball effortlessly. An early pull over the trees for six off Carlile set the tone, and he went on to hit three more sixes alongside five fours, mainly into the pavilion. Towards the end of his innings the running was important too, Ian Godfrey and Jamie Whiteside playing vital roles here.

In the end 198 was a more than respectable score.

Another excellent tea …………………….. you can conjure up your own images this week!

A tight start was essential for Thoresby. Evans and Woods delivered right on the button and it was the 6th over before a run was on the board. The pressure brought its own reward when, in the 13th over, Kay somewhat unluckily kicked on to his own stumps off Evans. Just three overs later Garden (R) took a good juggling catch at cover off Woods, having almost picked up a snorter a few overs earlier off Evans.

Lee and Booth batted sensibly without threatening to attack and their partnership effectively put Eckington well behind the clock. By this time Thoresby had changed their attack to Lee Willis, who bowled an excellent seven over spell, and the legendary wizardry of Norm Garden.

Norm was proving almost impossible to get away, varying pace, line and length in an impressively controlled way, albeit on a slightly helpful wicket. His spell really forced Eckington onto the back foot and when he dismissed youngster Lee for a patient 28, only next man in Carlile would be able to get the home side anywhere near.

As it was, after a few threatening blows, he took on Garden and was really well caught by Steele at cover point on the boundary. Advantage Thoresby.

Garden and Chatterton wheeled away, Chatster picking up wickets with successive balls in his sixth over, the first after some very speedy work by Godders. But in the end the (by now) sobered Allcock and Basford were able to hold out for the draw, Allcock hitting a couple of mighty blows for six.

Another pleasing team display. The batting held together well and the bowling / fielding was intense the whole way through. All played in a smashing atmosphere – thanks to the Eckington club for their hand in this.
