Thoresby Colliery II (20)           164 ao in 45.2 overs

Clumber Park (5)                      130 ao in 42.3 overs

Thoresby completed a prized and crucial victory against champions Clumber Park after an excellent battling display.

Skipper Woods chose to bat on winning the toss and it soon became apparent that the track would not make for fluent strokeplay. With the bounce uneven and the ball staying in the wicket, runs had to be earned. Gareth Beard was bowling well and took the early wicket of Evans with a clever slower ball.

Halfpenny and Chatterton began to build a partnership and the score rose more quickly after a few boundaries off Johnson. Harrison came into the attack and immediately began to turn the ball a fair way. But by this time Chatterton was especially into his stride and he reached an excellent 50 with some crisp drives and a couple of lovely pulls over the short legside boundary. One drive too often, however, proved his downfall.

Woods played his customary shots with immaculate timing – no easy feat on this two-paced track. Halfpenny, meanwhile, had been grinding out a score whilst being careful not to give his wicket away. But with the overs running out he made his change of gear too obvious and was well thought out by Beard for a respectable 48.

But after skipper Woods’ departure, on the fifth ball of the 42nd over, the Thoresby collapse was alarming. From 157-3 to 164 all out in 22 balls was a sorry effort and tea was taken in a pensive mood. Credit, though, the Clumber bowlers; especially Gareth Beard for his miserly 18 overs on a warm afternoon, and Steve Harrison for his guile and patience.

For Thoresby, though, it was “runs on the board”, as they say, and Clumber had to get’em.

Progress for established openers Deaves’n’Delaney was only steady, and Hutchinson made the breakthrough in the 7th over. Deaves tried to turn a fairly straight one to leg, the ball stopped on him slightly, and Hutch took a simple return catch in his follo-through.

Even more joy for Thoresby in the following over when Delaney left a ball outside his off stump from Evans, only to watch in horror as it swung back and clipped that very peg! 15 for 2 and Thoresby had a start.

But here were The Brothers Beard.

Gareth, the elder - all swashbuckling strokes and raw power. One huge six off a length ball from Evans.

David, the younger - watchful, correct, with impeccable timing. Two beautiful clips for four through mid wicket.

They took the score to 55 at the first drinks break and were starting to put Clumber back in the box seat. But the introduction of Norm Garden was to prove Beard snr’s end. After a few balls off the radar, Norm floated one up and Gareth ran down for a huge wipe, missed the ball and was bowled. It was a tired shot that owed much to his side’s dependence on his bowling earlier in the afternoon.

And with Woods now on at the top end to replace Evans, we knew Clumber had to play some clever shots to get near their target. In his third over he induced Beard jnr into an edge onto the pad that was quickly snapped up by the juggling skills of Ian Godfrey.

Harrison and youngster Plumley were watchful as they rebuilt. They put on 37 in 12 overs before Plumley top-edged to Hutch at square leg off Woody. This was the first of four wickets in ten balls for Brian and this really broke the backbone of the Clumber innings.

With the runrate rising for Clumber they had to go for some big shots. They had nothing to lose, already being champions, and wanted to continue their excellent run of victories. Rob Carrington-Wilde hit a big six over long on to keep them in the hunt, but the reintroduction of Stu Evans did the trick, first having Carrington-Wilde caught at mid on then, in his next over, yorking Shelley.

Stuart’s leaps of delight and the convergence of the Thoresby team showed the importance of the victory. And with Lea Park only picking up 16 points for their win, 9 points against Bilsthorpe will be enough to secure promotion to the dizzy heights of Division 5.
