Thoresby Colliery II [20]     206-4

Ashover II [2]                       123ao

This was a ‘must win’ game if Thoresby are to entertain any hopes of pushing for promotion this year and, fairly comfortably in the end, it would prove to be so.

Big Bri won the toss and elected to bat on this warm and humid afternoon. Halfpenny and Evans began with a mixture of resigned defence, against old adversary Charlie Gwillim, and more flamboyant attack against the erratic Rhodes. It was sufficient to keep out the experienced campaigner and take runs from the youngster’s end, and it wasn’t too long before Rhodes was replaced with the left-arm-over attack of Harris. He too bowled just the occasional good ball although it was his rank long hop that took the first wicket, Halfpenny (35 off 70 balls) skilfully picking out the deep square leg fielder who did his best to drop the ball but in the end held on to make the score 62-1 after an hour and ten minutes.

Evans continued in his time honoured vein knowing that, if adequate support were offered, a substantial total would be built. Chatterton moved things on before he too was a victim to the dreaded slow long hop, being snaffled in the gully for 22 off 26 balls. This brought captain Woods to the crease - being convinced to push himself up the order by Mick Case. This would prove to be a matchwinning decision as Woods found the very best of his form, timing the ball to perfection from the word go. As the afternoon and heat wore on, Woods imperiously smashed the ball in his arc of mid on to backward square. With support from Evans, he took the score from 93 to 191 in the space of 13 overs. When both were out in quick succession it was left to Edger and Godfrey to carry the score beyond 200.

Hutchinson and Edger opened for Thoresby with the new ball but the Ashover openers looked comfortable. Indeed this would be their Oval or Taunton for the season and Alexander, in particular, was relishing the true (but slow) track. Lucky then that he mistimed a devastating full toss from Edger to give Woods a low and tumbling catch to his left. Soon after Champion tried too hard to turn one to leg and ended up spooning a simple catch to Halfpenny at mid wicket. And when, in the 18th over, Edger took two wickets in successive balls, the task was so much harder for the visitors. From hereon in Thoresby could experiment and vary the bowling. Seven were tried in all and only Crinks and W Carline could offer any resistance. However, with only three overs left two more wickets were still needed. It was left to Stuart ‘Golden Arm’ Evans to break the defence of Carline, bringing one back off the inside edge to hit middle. And, on the last ball of the same over, as veteran Gwillim and Rhodes dallied over a possible bye, stumper Godfrey threw down the stumps to bring victory for Thoresby.
