Anston II (0) 71ao
Thoresby Colliery II (20) 72-2
Another
impressive bowling performance allowed Thoresby to ease to victory over Anston,
despite the loss of Edger (holiday) and

looked parched white but had a hint of moisture from Friday’s rain. Thoresby
skipper Woods won the toss and followed his hunch to insert Anston. His
decision looked like paying off early as
Youngsters
Stoneman and Roddis looked good for Anston, Roddis especially timing the ball
well through the covers and playing one lovely hook shot off the remarkably
accurate Evans. However these shots bred a little too much confidence as the
last ball of Hutch’s 5th over, which had already gone for nine,
found its way to Roddis’ leg stump with a beautifully aimed yorker.
The
experienced bowling partnership then really got to work as they frustrated the
Anston batsmen. The wicket was true at half-volley length, but always had
something in it for those willing to work the seam. And Stu Evans did just this
when he bowled Lyne and with his next delivery had Carter LBW. The batsman was
disappointed but when you take middle then put your FEET on that mark you can’t
be too upset when the ball hits you in front!
Smith jnr
looked like playing some nice offside shots with lovely timing, but a change of
bowling to skipper Woods was enough to con him into a swipe within six balls.
And when Mick Case took a super catch at first slip off Evans to dismiss
Williamson, Colliery were certainly looking at an early finish. Anston skipper
Malone, and Flynn, looked to boost the total with staunch defence and a few
lusty blows, but the guile of Chatterton was enough to bowl the latter. Last
man Fretwell then found a top edge off a full toss from Woods to be caught at
mid on by Scott Dickens.
This was,
then, an excellent, tight bowling display by Thoresby with super figures from
Hutchy and Stu and effective contributions at the right times from Brian and
Chatster. In addition, important fielding contributions from Lee Willis, Glenn
Keeble and Steve ‘All-Rounder’ Skell kept the performance neat’n’tidy.
Dickens
(who had to leave at 5.30 for serious drinking duties in
Halfpenny
continued to go at everything and although Anston thought they were unlucky,
when you’re chasing seventy-odd you only need a bit of luck to take it away
from the bowlers. Evans came in and played positively, and with the outfield
absolutely flying the required total was inevitably drawing nearer. Despite
Evans falling in a similar fashion to Dickens, this only left Chatterton with
the task of facing a few balls before a slash over gully brought the last few
runs.
