WORKSOP (20)                        168 for 8

THORESBY COLLIERY (3)                33 all out

This was always going to be a difficult weekend for the club, with numerous players unavailable.

We arrived at Worksop in a torrential downpour - perhaps the weather was trying to tell us something?

After this dampening the covers were removed to reveal a pitch which had absolutely no grass on, which, to be fair, was in keeping with the rest of the square. Two very muddy areas either side of the pitch also concerned the umpires in terms of players’ safety. However, they decided on a prompt start.

Whilst Chesh was occupied with the coin toss, Tuffers went down with a mysterious knee injury, one that unfortunately means he will not have the honour of representing the club again this season. As it had been decided that we were fielding, Chesh asked the Worksop captain if we could have a substitute fielder for the unfortunate Scott. Very unsportingly this request was turned down, much to the disgust of some of the Worksop players. With Ian ˝p being delayed due to his trans-Derbyshire tour we took the field with nine men.

Chesh and Jono opened up and bowled superbly, the Worksop openers finding it very difficult to score. Ian arrived to be told the sad news about Tuffers who, by now, after having read all his newspapers, was trying to sleep off his injury in the dressing room.

Jono made the first breakthrough when Grainger played on. A couple of overs later he trapped Hassan lbw. Chesh then had Bentley lbw; at this point Worksop were 23-3.

Pym came to the wicket and, after an early scare when he gave half a half chance to Callum, he took charge and played some glorious shots on a very difficult pitch. Billy was introduced into the attack and finally got the breakthrough when he had Ward lbw to end an excellent stand for Worksop (the only one of the entire game). Jono returned to the attack and took three more wickets, and Billy another one, as Worksop were pegged back. Pym remained unbeaten at the end, this was an innings of great skill and patience on a poor pitch that was getting worse. However, in no way was it totally to blame for what would follow.

Chesh and Jono strode to the wicket but within two overs both were back in the pavilion as the Worksop bowlers took control. Jonesey became the third victim and the rest followed soon after as Thoresby were bowled out in a shameful 8.3 overs of quality bowling from Robson and Moore.

This was a poor day for the club, what with the unavailability, a horrid batting display and Pete Scott’s tragic injury. Indeed it was a sad sight to see him drive away from the ground. We now have to pull together and put the day’s events behind us both individually and as a club.
