THORESBY COLLIERY (1)                        99 all out

NOTTS. & ARNOLD AMATEURS (20)    101 for 4

Chesh finally lost the toss and we were invited to bat first on pitch that was slow and had just a bit of moisture after another poor week of weather.

Nige was promoted to open with Chesh and all went well for the first four overs as both struck boundaries and were helped by numerous extras, in fact the first four balls from Walters were all no balls. So at 25-0 all was well, but as in recent weeks disaster was just around the corner, Chesh bowled by a ball from Foss that he would normally keep out.

The runs then started to dry up and after a cautious start Jonesey was bowled around his legs, again a ball that would not normally trouble him. Ben followed shortly after, chipping a catch to midwicket. Nige then went, getting a faint nick to a wide ball trying to get the momentum going again. Jono and Ian went in quick succession to leave us in all sorts of trouble. Six wickets had now fallen for just twenty runs, the majority to poor shots.

Credit must also go to the bowlers who, after a wayward start, bowled a very good line. Naeem and Scott then dug in and grafted a useful partnership, but again a loose shot prevailed as Scott who had looked in great touched missed a straight ball from spinner Rann which he was trying to work on the off side. This brought John to the wicket, he took a terrible battering from Flood and possibly played the shot of the day, a great hook from under his nose. Naeem also started to play a few shots and at 97-7 with 8 overs left there was some hope that maybe a total of 130 was possible , which would have given us a chance.

But in keeping with the way the rest of the day had gone Naeem was given out stumped to a very close decision and Dave and Billy did not last long as John was left stranded at the other end. All credit goes to the lower order who grafted to try and get a decent total when the upper order had failed in spectacular form.

In reply Naeem was soon on a good length and Jono also caused the batsmen problems, but it was actually Dancing Dave who got the first wicket with a superb pick up and direct hit to run out Leiper. Naeem then struck to leave Arnold in a little trouble at 12-2. Then followed the vital partnership between Thornhill and Flood, their forty five runs being the highest of the match. Billy replaced Jono (who for once did not take a wicket) and almost immediately removed both batsmen to again give Arnold slight worries. Arnold captain Trewartha then saw his side home to what, in the end, was a very comfortable win.

The fielding and bowling performance was a vast improvement on last week and showed great character but we can’t purely rely on Chesh and Jonesey to get runs, the rest of the top order must start to contribute and take the pressure off them. We now go into a vital spell of four games against all the teams near the bottom as the league becomes ever closer. Starting with the visit of Bolsover on Saturday we must get the edge back in our game.
