KIVETON PARK (4)                        164 for 9

THORESBY COLLIERY (18)          167 for 6

This was probably our best performance of the season and contained the best spell of opening bowling since the Mark Cleary year.

Chesh continued his good form with the coin and had no hesitation in asking Kiveton to bat first on a wicket that looked to have just a little green due to the week’s poor weather.

The first over, bowled by newcomer Naeem, was spot on line but was followed by a stunning over from Jono. He first bowled the prolific Burgess with a near unplayable ball, then accounted for Cooper with a ball that was nearly as good. Jono’s next over produced the ball of the day to dismiss Coxon. Jono had now clean bowled all three of his victims.

Three overs later and Naeem had his first wicket for the club - the dangerous Snape. Jono completed his ‘five for’ in his sixth over when he again took two wickets to leave Kiveton in real trouble at 51-6. There followed a very good partnership between youngster McKeernan and Spurr before Stevie, who had replaced Naeem, trapped McKeernan lbw. Two overs later and Stevie had two in an over to leave Kiveton nine down with nineteen overs remaining.

This brought veteran Thompson to the crease and what a tremendous job he did supporting Spurr and using up all the overs. He was dropped a couple of times but  everyone realised what a great job he did for his team. Spurr remained unbeaten with an excellent innings that really dug his team out of trouble. This was thought to be a useful total, but one that was always going to be achievable.

Jono and Chesh started off well and looked in little trouble until the umpires intervened giving both batsmen out to slightly dubious decisions. To get both in one game was perhaps a little unlucky. Ben followed shortly after, again lbw, although there was little doubt with this one. Nige and Jonesey then steadied the innings with a cautious partnership, Jonesey facing 18 balls without scoring and Nige 24 during their stand.

Just as Thoresby were starting to get on top Jonesey fell to a sharp catch and Kiveton again had hope. Stevie joined Nige and these two had to graft against an accurate attack. With just twenty odd runs to go Nige played a poor shot and was bowled, again giving Kiveton hope. Callum joined Willis and displayed great maturity and concentration to stay with Stevie whilst the remaining runs were scored. Stevie finished the game with one of the best shots of the day.

This broke a run of seven consecutive league defeats by Kiveton and must give great confidence for the rest of the season. The team for Saturday contained six players under 23 and this week’s team will contain at least seven, possibly eight. A good sign for the future.
