Kiveton Park                192-5   (50 overs)        [19 pts]

Thoresby Colliery         131 a.o.(47 overs)        [2 pts]

Thoresby won the toss and elected to bowl. Grey clouds, an icy cold breeze and a damp, pudding like pitch, all set the
stage for the first game of the season.

Kiverton started their innings very cautiously on a pitch that was bound to play a few tricks.  Patel claimed the first wicket of the season.  His delivery pitched rather short and the batsman mistimed a pull shot.  The ball ballooned to backward of square leg and was safely held by the ever-exuberant Paul Hughes.

The second wicket stand of 149 is what really hurt the Thoresby side.  The Kiveton opener and number three, chanced their luck and were quite fortunate at times.  In their partnership both these batsman gave chances however the Thoresby fielders were unable to hold on.  Possibly it was the cold whether and an inability for them to feel their hands?  With some luck it will warm up over the coming weeks.  And so Kiveton progressed at a steady pace.  The final overs produced some unorthodox stroke play however it achieved the desired result - runs on the board.  The pick of the bowlers would have to be Patel who finished with 2/51 off 16 overs.

Thoresby's run chase did not get off to the best of starts.  Seasoned veterans - Cheshire and Birkett both fell in the first four overs.  This left Hughes and Scott the important role of steadying the ship.  They batted with patience for the next forty minutes.  Simply pushing the ball around and trying to adjust to the difficult conditions.  Kiveton's opening bowler, R. Spurr, was proving to be a handful.  With his height and accuracy he managed to move the ball very late - both in the air and off the pitch.  He moved the ball both ways, and at times produced unplayable deliveries.

Scott departed in the 15th over with the score at 35.  Hill and Hughes continued the rescue effort, grinding away at the bowling, forever waiting for the bad ball.  Hughes was finally caught with the score at 57.  A few quick wickets resulted in Patel joining Hill at the crease.  This pair started cautiously however soon became accustomed to the wicket.  Their 60 run partnership was a highlight of the Thoresby innings.  They ran well between the wickets and caused a little panic among the Kiveton camp.

Foolishly Hill threw his wicket away, hitting a simple catch to deep mid wicket.  He had made 32.  In an effort to keep his side in the match, Patel went down swinging.  He was stumped for 36.  Thoresby were finally dismissed in the 47th over.  A disappointing result.

Not the best of starts to the season however we can only improve.  Thoresby is a team that is bursting with potential.  When this is realised I have no doubt that we will be a force to be reckoned with.  An enjoyable and competitive season awaits.  Cricket is surely the best game ever.

Kiveton V Thoresby Coll (The Alternative Match Report)

On a cold day Thoresby returned to the scene of last season Tomlins Trophy Qtr Final triumph to play Kiveton Park.

Chesh won the toss and inserted Kiveton on a damp green wicket, the feeling was that a couple of early wickets would expose Kiveton’s long tail and hopefully lead to a 20 point start to the season.

‘Jonno’ and Saylesh opened up with accurate spells without much luck, eventually Say made the break through as Paul managed to make a simple catch look difficult and pouched one of the Kiveton openers.

This bought Kiveton’s Aussie import Snape in to join one of the best young batsmen in the league in Burgess, they proceeded to bat for the majority of the innings and although riding their luck they produced effective batting against a workmanlike Thoresby attack, a few catches were dropped although there was no lack of effort in the fielding, eventually Kiveton closed on 191 for 5 which I personally thought although not impossible was 40 runs to many on a slow wicket and very slow outfield.

Thoresby opened up with Chesh and Nige, Chesh departed caught before Robbie had finished eating his cakes for tea!! Hughes strode to the wicket bristling with determination and was soon striking his trademark blows all around the ground, Nige nibbled and got caught behind and after that the innings was a stop start affair that never really looked like achieving victory, Paul, Pete‘Tuffers’Scott, Jonno and Say all played cameo’s without going on to reach the 50+ scores that were required and with Callum and Robbie valiantly trying to bat out for a draw the umpires finally showed that we were applying the LBW law and Callum was given out with 3 overs to go.

The dressing room was understandably despondent, but it is early days, my thoughts would be that we lost the game from overs 15-40 in the Kiveton innings when not much was happening and we switched off and went too quiet, we much encourage each other more and all be accountable for helping to raise each others game and spirits.

Not the start we wanted but I am sure 20 points against Glapwell will soon have us charging up the league to where we belong.

PS:  For most players at the club look on the bright side – Chesh/Dave E/Steve & Ben are all off the mark in the ‘WALKER 2004 DUCK TROPHY’
