THORESBY COLLIERY (5) 198 for 5

FARNSFIELD (18)       201 for 6

Thoresby slipped to another defeat, albeit in a tight encounter that went to the last over of the game and with a much improved performance.

Chesh won the toss and again opted to bat on a pleasant spring day with the Thoresby ground looking an absolute picture and a credit to the guys who put all the hard work in throughout the week.

Chesh and Jonno opened  against the decent attack of Kiwi Silcock and Collins and started steadily with both hitting sweet boundaries, suddenly Jonno played a shot that Hutchy would have been ashamed of!!, it was a kind on combined straight drive cum cut shot, and he was easily caught.

Hansie Hughes joined Chesh and they soon got on top of the bowling, Farnsfield main bowler ‘Windy Miller’ came on and he was despatched to all parts, as an act of desperation at 120 for 1 then Farnsfield turned back to opening bowler Silcock even though he had only had 6 overs rest since his 12 over opening spell, inexplicably Hansie played a rash drive outside off stump and was caught behind, If Thoresby batted well from here they would score 235, if they batted just ok they would score 210, they scored 198!!

To many players came in playing big shots and the strike wasn’t rotated enough, Chesh batted well for his 80 odd but starved of strike and with a defensive field he never broke away from the shackles of some tight bowling and the 198 was only achieved due to Nige’s quickfire unbeaten 27.

Thoresby would have to bowl and field well to defend the slightly below average target especially against the experienced top 3 of Bennett/Delaney and Edwards.

We chirped away at the batsmen and managed to unnerve Bennett who after a few lusty blows was well bowled by Jonno who had dropped onto an excellent line and length, Stevie then had Delaney well caught behind and Farnsfield were 31 for 2

Edwards was joined by new recruit from Bilsthorpe Bell, Bell thriving in the “Unusual Facilities at Thoresby” (Have been advised by my legal team to say no more than that)  and rode his luck to score 40, Edwards was more circumspect in his 49 and gradually the run rate increased, Billy had been introduced and bowled an excellent spell for his 1 for 35 off 12 overs, showing the effectiveness of line and length bowling instead of people trying to bowl the “Wonder Ball”, Dave Evans recovered from a bad first over to bowl ok and after Tuffers had induced a false shot from Edwards that was excellently caught by Ben, Robbie ran out the new batsmen and suddenly Farnsfield still needed 55 off 10 overs with 5 wickets down.

Jonno replaced Billy and his comeback over went for 10, Miller batted well for an unbeaten 42 and despite Jonno bowling Glynn Edwards, Farnsfield won by 4 wickets with 5 balls to spare.

A better performance although we didn’t bat as well as we mite have done, indeed it should be noted that other than Chesh and Hansie, in 8 matches there has only been 1 other innings past 50 by a Thoresby Batsmen and we have to learn not to completely rely on those 2 quality batsmen.

Thoresby were better in the field, much more intense and focused and actually looked like a team again, I would give the performance at Bridon 3 out of 10 and this week 8 out of 10, if we are to win matches and get up to 9 or 10 out of 10 we need to eradicate the small amount of sulking from a selected few, when they are sulking because they didn’t bowl when they think they should do or having tantrums when they get out then they should remember that they had a chance to influence the game and they should look at themselves and not blame others,  3 players in Scott Ben and Robbie, not for the first time didn’t bat or bowl this week but they encouraged and supported and ran their socks off in the field and paid £6 for the privilege ALL players should remember there individual scores and performances count for nothing if we lose.
