THORESBY COLLIERY (3)    119 all out      (Martin Cheshire 38, Paul Gurnell 5 for 20, Daniel Brown 3 for 26)

CUCKNEY (20)                       120 for 7         (Billy Lippeatt 3 for 25, Dave Evans 3 for 53)

Cuckney’s ground is a quirky old place.  The first thing that you notice is the remarkable slope.  It is unusual and interesting indeed.  The ground is nestled among a group of fields.  And from the top end of the ground you can see a delightful array of lush, green, rolling hills.  Like most of these village cricket grounds – the sense of history is so strong that it can be smelt in the air.  And it arouses memories of famous games that have been played as well as visions of famous games to come.

Unfortunately Saturday’s match will not be remembered for the memorable spectacle that it might have been.

Thoresby’s 119 was a disappointing total.  Especially considering the brilliant opening partnership between Birkett(20) and Cheshire(38) of 64 runs.  These two continue to flourish at the top of the order.  Martin is steadily finding some form and should look to finish the season strongly.

As can be seen from the scorecard there wasn’t much that followed.  A few nice fours were struck, but obviously not enough.

The Cuckney innings was extremely patient.  In the opening stages it looked as if they would cruise to victory.  This was far from the case.  They were unable to dominate the spin twins – Minnie Me Lippeat and Dave Rainbow Evans.

These two master crasftsmen span Thoresby back into the game.  It was a combination of many factors – a tireless line and length, a cheeky and dogged determination, some spectacular fielding and a sense of fun.

They rushed through the overs and took the odd wicket and before long, Thoresby were in with a solid chance.

Lippeat can boast of his astonishing figures of 20 overs, 11 maidens, 24 runs and 3 wickets.  Superb!!!

Evans has rediscovered the fire from years past.  With the enthusiasm of an Olympic athlete, he was jumping and appealing and punching the air.  He returned tidy figures of 20 overs, 6 maidens, 3/51.  He is back!!!  He is definitely back!!!!

And so Thoresby looked to have the upper hand but a few chances did not go their way.  A catch was dropped at cover.  A stumping opportunity was fumbled.  Such is the nature of the game.  It is no big deal.  So long as you are playing, you have giving yourself an equal chance to fail or succeed.  That’s kind of the most exciting part.

In the end Cuckney reached the total but they did have that flutter of uncertainty.

3 games to go!  Oh my, how time flies with so much ease.  As the autumn winds prepare us for the chill of winter we can look to finish the year with a bang.  Let’s make a happy memory.
