Thoresby Colliery [4] 220-4
Bridon [17] 223-2
This game had it all – Thoresby at their best and Thoresby
at their worst!!
Chesh won the toss and chose to bat on a nice day and
with the small Bridon ground in immaculate condition,
Bridon opened up with their Aussie left arm quickie
steaming in, his runup longer than most pensioners’
afternoon stroll.
He soon enticed Nige to nibble and we were 8 for 1, Chesh followed shortly and this bought Tuffers
in to join Hansie Hughes, Hughes is in prime form
while Tuffers in the first month of the season had
seen very few runs (other than the ones off his bowling).
Hansie was soon playing shots around the ground in
his brash swashbuckling style while Tuffers oozing
sophistication was soon nudging the ball around in the style of his boyhood
hero Douglas Jardine.
Paul departed in the 70’s that elusive first Bassetlaw ton surely not far away,
Tuffers now took on the roll of playing the big shots
and despatched a big six out of the ground, he was
joined by Saylesh equipped with trainers, no
jockstrap or box and Chesh’s bat!! Say whacked
a quick 40 and along with Tuffers on 80 Thoresby
closed on an highly creditable 221 for 4. Bridon is a high scoring ground and in mid summer on a
quicker wicket and outfield a par score would have been 250 but on this day 221
should have been enough.
Now came the highlight of the day!! A veritable feast
of home made cakes was on offer at tea, Coffee Cake, Scones with Cream and
dinky sweet butterfly buns just to name a few, Robbie tried them all!! and then he tried some more!!
We went out to field full of confidence [ed’s comment
- and bloody cakes!] and Saylesh soon bowled ex-Thoresby
player Fenwick in the first over, this bought seasoned veteran McLeod to the
wicket, he started slowly but helped by a large selection of half volleys and
very full tosses he was soon despatching the ball to
all parts, Thoresby’s attack looked sterile, the
fielding cumbersome and the team spirit and encouragement non existent, too
many players disappeared and went through the motions and Bridon
achieved a fairly comfortable 8 wicket victory with McLeod scoring a class
unbeaten century.
Thoresby 1sts have some fine players but to be honest its totally irrelevant
how well they do as individuals if we don’t gel as a team, Saturday afternoon
there were too many bruised ego’s about poor individual performances and not
enough commitment and drive towards the team goal
This week instead of Shakespeare, I leave you with my definition of what a
‘Team’ is:
“A group of individuals pulling together in the same way towards a common
goal”
Were Thoresby a team in the field last Saturday??, personally I don’t think so:
